Life can challenge and break us all in different ways. This powerful series of 5 female portraits are a celebration of our strength and resilience. Inspired by the ancient Japanese art of Kintsugi - mending broken pottery with gold.
The philosophy behind the kintsugi practice recognises and heals the broken parts of us with beautiful gold, making us stronger than ever where the former cracks were.
My paintings seek to explore how these traumas make us who we are, how we overcome the things in life that sometimes overcome us and how our scars are part of our story. We can be beautiful and strong because of our experiences, not despite them. I want to inspire people to realise and accept that - you may feel broken at times,
you are still loved,
you can still be strong,
you are worth mending.
The portrait pictured is called Beryl - inspired by the wonderful Woods Ware Beryl pottery and the iconic Rosie the Riveter painting by J Howard Miller.
Painted in acrylic paint, the painting has been varnished in matt varnish, then carefully gilded with gold leaf along the pottery cracks. The gilding is raised up on the painting and will catch the light as you pass it. The gold leaf has then been varnished with a gloss varnish to further enhance the shine. Each painting has been edged in black wash tape - this is to reduce the weight when shipping and a more environmentally friendly option, leaving you to frame as desired, or hang it as it is. Measuring 24" by 36" (2ft by 3ft) this beautiful statement piece is sure to be a talking point in your home.
Your painting will be carefully packaged, sent by tracked mail and will need to be signed for on delivery. However, if you live in the South Wales area, I may be able to deliver the portrait to you. For delivery outside of the UK, please contact me with your location and I will send you a quote.
